Volkswagen Aims To Drive Growth In The Compact Sedan Segment With The Virtus

- The Volkswagen Virtus will make its debut on March 8, 2022
- The Virtus is based on the same MQB A0 IN platform as the VW Taigun
- The Virtus will come with a 1.0-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI engine
SUVs by all means are going to be the mainstay of the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited's (SAVWIPL) India 2.0 journey and that's already begun with models like the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq spawned on the highly localised MQB A0 IN platform. But, the German marquee is not shying away from the conventional compact sedan segment given the limited options in that particular space. Skoda already launched the Slavia compact sedan in India and now Volkswagen is gearing up to showcase the Virtus to the world.

Speaking with Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, Editor-In-Chief, carandbike on the latest Freewheeling With SVP webisode, Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, "The sedan segment is one of the segments that doesn't show the growth potential as what we would like to see in the segment. But we also know that there is not a lot of choice for customers in that segment. So we're going to add choice with a Volkswagen and the Virtus is going to do that. I think it's a promising model, the first reaction that we've seen internally and externally are very promising and we're proud to add another car into the Indian market that speaks the VW language in terms of quality. And I think our team in India has done a great job in terms of bringing the car into the market. Let's see how consumers react to it."

There is already a lot of interest generated by the Virtus and as we close in on the world debut, we'll see it growing. The Virtus is underpinned by the MQB A0 IN platform and is likely to share the drivetrain options as well. So expect the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI turbo petrol motor with the manual and torque converter automatic transmission options and the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI turbo petrol engine with the manual or dual-shift gearbox (DSG) automatic transmission options to be on offer.

As already mentioned, the Volkswagen Virtus is going to be a contemporary and technologically advanced car, and most likely it will be loaded to the brim with all the modern bells and whistles. So it's likely to have connected car tech along with features like ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, auto-dimming inner rear view mirror (iRVM), auto climate control, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system coupled with a premium sound system, LED headlights and taillights, rain sensing wipers, rear view camera with parking sensors, six airbags, antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) among others.
