Volkswagen Collaborates With LG for Development of Connected Car Platform

- The platform will enable vehicles to communicate with external devices
- VW and LG will also develop a context-sensitive notification centre
- They will also work on new infotainment technology for connected cars
The German carmaker, which has been in hot water over the emissions scandal, will team up with LG Electronics for the development of a connected car platform that will enable vehicles to communicate with external devices. Over the next few years, the two companies will concentrate on:
a. Developing technologies that bring together the connected car and the smart home so that drivers are able to control and monitor smart devices in their homes - such as lights, security systems and domestic appliances - from out on the road.
b. Developing a context-sensitive notification centre that can deliver messages in an intuitive and safe manner and provide optimised recommendations to the driver in real time.
c. Developing next-generation infotainment technology for connected cars.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Form, Volkswagen Group Research Head of Electronic and Vehicle Research, said, "Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalisation of its brands. Our focus in doing so is always on our customers. For them, comfort, safety and energy efficiency play a central role. LG is a strong, reliable partner in the implementation of new features and one of the drivers of innovation in the networked household. We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use smart home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems."
Last year LG secured a deal to supply components, including battery cells and electric motor, for General Motors 2017 Chevrolet Bolt electric car. The South Korean electronics giant also supplies products such as car audio systems and batteries to Volkswagen.
