BMW R NineT Scrambler Off-Road Variants Revealed In Spy Shots

- Two off-road capable variants of BMW R NineT spotted on test
- Both bikes expected to get more suspension travel, updated electronics
- Engine like to remain the same as the current 1,170 cc boxer-twin
BMW Motorrad seems to be working on two new scrambler models, which are more off-road capable than just being urban scramblers. Latest spy shots show the bikes with a clear focus on off-road ability, with possibly a view to target the Triumph Scrambler 1200 models. Test mules of both bikes seen in the spy shots have 21-inch front wheels, and come kitted out with Metzeler Karoo 3 off-road tyres. Both models also have a lot of suspension travel, and are expected to be successors to the BMW R NineT Urban G/S and the R NineT Scrambler.

Two more off-road capable variants of the BMW R NineT are expected to be introduced soon
The G/S is expected to have longer suspension than the Scrambler with 250 mm travel at front and rear, while the Scrambler is expected to get 220 mm suspension travel. There are other off-road ready bits, including chunkier footrests and levers, as well as high mudguards. The engine is expected to be the same 1,170 cc, air/oil-cooled two-cylinder engine with an output of 109 bhp at 7,520 rpm and peak torque of 119 Nm at 6,000 rpm.

With longer travel suspension, the off-road ready BMW R NineT G/S and Scrambler are also likely to get a more comprehensive electronics suite
The electronics may be tweaked to offer more comprehensive riding modes, possibly even borrowing the IMU-controlled suite from the latest GS models, rather than continue with the rather basic rider aids including two standard riding modes on the current BMW R NineT. So far, there's no word on when the production models will be unveiled, but we expect BMW Motorrad to announce something official about the two bikes towards the end of the year.
