The cheating case was filed by Kapil Sharma in December last year with the Mumbai Police. The comedian alleged that he was cheated of Rs. 5.3 crore by Dilip Chhabria and others. In the complaint, Sharma told the police that he paid over Rs. 5 crore to Chhabria between March and May 2017 to design a vanity bus for him. However, there was no progress made till 2019. Kapil then approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The report quotes an unnamed official saying, "During the investigation of the case, the role of Bonito Chhabria came to light. The Crime Branch unit presented Bonito in the holiday court on Saturday and demanded maximum police custody. A crime branch official told the court that Bonito used the money to pay off credit card dues, EMIs of loans and for shopping. Bonito's lawyer cited his ill health and the court granted him bail on a cash bond of Rs. 25,000 on medical grounds.
