Honda Patents Electric Hub-Motor In India

- Hub-mounted electric motor seen in Honda's patent drawings
- Honda may be working on upcoming electric scooter for India
- No details available on launch timeline and specifications
Honda has filed patents for a design of a hub-mounted electric motor in India. This new motor could be used in Honda’s first electric scooter to be launched in India. The patent drawings don’t reveal much of the design of the scooter, but it looks quite different from the current Honda Activa 6G, so the upcoming electric scooter could possibly be a ground-up new design, with technology offering decent range.

The patent drawings show the hub-mounted motor, on a scooter which has a conventional swingarm, in place of where the internal combustion engine with CVT is usually on a petrol-powered scooter. The rear wheel appear to be 10-inch in size, and the patent drawings suggest a front drum brake, mounted on a 12-inch wheel. Overall, the patent drawings suggest that Honda will position the upcoming electric scooter as an affordable option, focussed more on utility than on performance and features.

In the past though, Honda filed several design patents in India which have not seen the light of a production model. In some cases, the patents are filed to test out certain components, sometimes as simple as a LED headlight to be introduced in a different model. If Honda indeed is looking to introduce an electric scooter in India, it will still be sometime away, but considering the number of electric scooters being launched in India, and with Hero MotoCorp also getting ready to launch its first electric scooter sometime in October, Honda may well be quietly working on its own version of an electric two-wheeler.
