MoRTH Announces New Rules For Foreign Registered Vehicles Plying In India


- MoRTH has amended rules for imported visiting India for 2022
- Documents need to translated in English and authenticated in foreign cars
- The new rules aim to which formalise the movement of non-transport or personal vehicles
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a new Motor Vehicles Non Transport Vehicles visiting India Rules, 2022 which formalise the movement of Non-Transport or Personal vehicles registered in other registered in other countries and entering or plying in the Indian territory. According to the new rules, the following documents shall be carried in the vehicle(s) operating under these rules during the duration of stay in the country, a valid registration certificate, a valid driving license or international driving permit, whichever is applicable; a valid insurance policy, a valid pollution under control certificate (if applicable in the origin country).

The new rules aim to formalise the movement of non-transport or personal vehicles in the country
The rules also mention that in case the documents referred above are in a language other than English, then an authorized English translation, duly authenticated by the issuing authority, shall be carried along with the original documents. Motor vehicles registered in any country other than India shall not be permitted to transport local passengers and goods within the territory of India. Moreover, motor vehicles registered in any country other than India shall be required to comply with rules and regulations made under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 of India.

Last year, MoRTH also announced a new registration mark for new vehicles - the Bharat series or BH-series. According to an official notification issued by the ministry, a vehicle bearing this registration mark will not require a new registration mark when the owner of the vehicle shifts from one state to another. The vehicle registration facility under 'Bharat series' or BH-series is available voluntarily to Defense personnel, employees of Central Government, State Government, Central / State Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and private sector companies/organizations, which have their offices in four or more States / Union territories.
