Key Highlights
- The new Swift Dzire will come to India by April or May 2017
- The car will be sold through the regular Maruti Suzuki dealerships
- The new-gen Swift will be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show
2016 has been a very good year for Maruti Suzuki with one of its biggest launches in a while, the Vitara Brezza taking centre stage in terms of sales and growing market share. Products like the Baleno, Swift and the Alto keep growing in terms of sales figures too and with Nexa’s new Ignis just around the corner, 2017 will start off on a positive note for the India’s largest car maker. However, the Ignis is not the next big thing for Maruti Suzuki. That honour would go to the next generation Swift.
The Swift in India also spawns the equally popular Swift Dzire subcompact sedan.
To give a much-needed boost to the sector, Maruti will launch the new Swift Dzire subcompact sedan before the hatchback in India. While the Dzire is expected to hit the showrooms somewhere around April or May 2017, the Swift hatchback will only make it to India during the Indian festive season later in the year. The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and the Swift hatchback will both be sold through the regular Maruti Suzuki dealers and not through the more premium Nexa outlets. When contacted, Maruti Suzuki refused to comment on the subject.
The New Gen Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Will Up The Ante In The Segment
Originally intended for the Paris Auto Show a few months ago, the car will now be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show instead. The new Swift is an important product for Maruti as it will bring in yet another torrent of sales numbers. Currently, the Swift Dzire sells about 16,000-18,000 units every month while the Swift hatchback brings in an average of about 15,000 units a month making both very important cars in the Maruti Suzuki portfolio.

The 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine from the Baleno RS will also be available in the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and could also make its way into the upcoming Swift and Swift Dzire. Apart from the possibility of the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine, the Swift and the Swift Dzire will get the 1.3-litre diesel engine. Expect both cars to get an automatic or AMT option this time around as currently only the Dzire gets a diesel AMT option.
The Baleno RS Will Be Launched In February 2017
A car that was originally intended for only India is now also exported to select markets around the world. In India though, with the likes of the compact SUV and premium sedan quickly eating into the subcompact sedan segment, overall sales of the whole segment have been dropping steadily. In fact, most of the segment is now targeted towards fleet and taxi buyers and partners like Uber and Ola instead of the private individual.
Considering the fact that products like the Baleno are made in India and exported to Japan, chances of the Swift being exported are high too. Other launches for 2017 will include the Baleno RS and a facelifted Ciaz sedan.
