The Toyota Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Fortuner and has been under consideration for a while now. The Hilux will be pitched as a lifestyle vehicle and will take on the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross in the segment. Compared to the Fortuner, the Hilux sports a different front design with the larger hexagonal grille, sweptback LED headlamps with LED DRLs, and a new bumper. It's likely to arrive as a double-cab pick-up, offering the practicality of a four-door with a loading bed at the back. carandbike has reached out to Toyota Kirloskar Motor for an official response and will update this piece as and when the company responds.

The Toyota Hilux is based on the same IMV-2 platform that underpins the Fortuner and the Innova Crysta. The pick-up measures 5,285 mm in length with the wheelbase measuring 3,085 mm. It gets flared wheel arches, body cladding and even a side step to further aid to that rugged appeal. The Hilux is also comfortable on the inside and gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include 18-inch alloy wheels, ventilated seats, cruise control, eight-way electrically adjustable front seats and connected car tech on the international models. Power on the Toyota Hilux is expected to come from the 2.8-litre diesel engine that develops 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque on the automatic variant. The 6-speed manual version makes do with 420 Nm of peak torque instead. Toyota could bring both 4x2 and 4x4 variants to cater to different customer requirements. Compared to the Fortuner, the Hilux will get leaf springs and a rigid axle at the rear, to improve payload capacity and off-roading capability.

There's no word on the pricing as yet but the Toyota Hilux could be priced around Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom) with the model locally assembled at Toyota's Bidadi plant in Karnataka. In comparison, the Isuzu V-Cross is priced between Rs. 18.05 lakh - Rs. 25.60 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Do note India still gets the older generation V-Cross as opposed to other markets. The lifestyle pick-up space is a niche and the Hilux will cater to a dedicated set of buyers in India.
