Bajaj Auto Registers 52 Per Cent Drop Month-on-Month In May 2021

- Bajaj Auto posted sales of 271,862 units (two-wheelers + CVs) in May 2021
- Bajaj registered domestic sales of 60,342 two-wheelers in May 2021
- Bajaj sold 488 CV units in the domestic market in May 2021
Bajaj Auto posted sales of 271,862 units (two-wheelers + CVs) in May 2021, which is growth of 114 per cent. Yes, it does seem like tremendous growth but to put it into perspective, one must note that May 2020 was the month where all OEMs were coming off a month of no sales. The general sales uptake in May 2020 was slow and hence the abnormal growth is a one-off instance. A better idea of performance may come from correlating the sales of May 2021 with April 2021 and that's when the picture becomes clearer.

The company exported 30,820 CV units in May 2021, which was 128 per cent more than in May 2020. For reference, the company exported 31,942 units in April 2021. One of the reasons of low CV sales could be the drop in demand as more and more people prefer using personal mobility instead of shared mobility.

(Combining the two-wheeler and commercial vehicle sales, Bajaj Auto sold 60,830 units in the domestic market)
Combining the two-wheeler and commercial vehicle sales, Bajaj Auto sold 60,830 units in the domestic market and exported 211,032 units in May 2021. The company sold a total of 271,862 units (domestic+exports) which is an increase of 114 per cent over May 2020, owing primarily to the high number of units exported. Compared to May 2021, Bajaj Auto sold 134,471 units in the domestic market and exported 253,545 units in April 2021. The company sold a total of 388,016 units (domestic+exports).
Month on month comparison shows that Bajaj's domestic sales fell 54.76 per cent, exports fell 16.77 per cent and total unit sales fell 29.94 per cent. So you see, while the year on year growth is phenomenal, it can be termed as an anomaly. The month-on-month figures reveal the true picture and suggest that the company lost ground in May 2021 on account of partial lockdowns in many states of the country.
