Key Highlights
- The mild hybrid tech on the new Verna will be similar to the one on Ciaz
- The hybrid system will make the 2017 Verna eligible for the FAME subsidy
- The 2017 Verna will make it to India in the second half of next year
The current year has surely been an eventful for Hyundai India with two major launches - Elantra and Tucson; and the Korean auto giant is all set to bring 2017 with a bang as well with the likes of the Grand i10 facelift and new generation Verna. While we have already told you that the 2017 Hyundai Verna will be a mini Elantra in many ways, reports now suggest that the C-segment sedan will also come with a mild-hybrid system.
The mild hybrid technology is reportedly similar to that of Maruti Suzuki's, currently available on the segment rivaling Ciaz, helping return more kilometres to a litre. The tech is called 'Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki' (SHVS) on Maruti cars and uses regenerative braking, Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a start-stop system to improve the fuel efficiency on the vehicle.
What's more is that the mild hybrid system can be added to the vehicle without making any major mechanical changes, while the car also becomes eligible to avail subsidy under the government's 'Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles' (FAME) initiative. As a result, the next generation Hyundai Verna will not only see improved fuel efficiency figures but a marginal price cut as well.
The 2017 Hyundai Verna made its international debut in China this year at the Chengdu Motor Show and will be making it to India in the second half of next year. The sedan uses design cues from Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 philosophy with sharp lines replacing the curvaceous styling seen on the current model. The automaker says that every body panel on the new Verna has been crafted from scratch.
Inside, the all-new Hyundai Verna will get sporty interiors, with an improved feature list including a touchscreen infotainment system that will support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. With a 30mm longer wheelbase, expect liberating space in the cabin.
Talking about engine options, the 2017 Hyundai Verna will feature both 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel motors, while transmission options will include a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. It is not clear at this point, as to which engines off the lot with get the mild hybrid tech. More details on the new generation Hyundai Verna are expected to emerge in the coming months. So make sure to keep watching this space.
