Car Sales June 2021: Maruti Suzuki's Total Sales Reach 147,368 Units As Lockdown Eases In India

- Maruti Suzuki's total sales for June 2021 stood at 147,368 units
- This includes domestic sale of 130,348 units and exports of 17,020 units
- Maruti closed the Q1 of FY 2021-22 with total sales of 353,614 units
Maruti Suzuki India has released the monthly sales numbers for June 2021, during which the company's total sales (domestic + exports) stood at 147,368 units. This includes the cumulative domestic sale of 130,348 units and exports of 17,020 units. Compared to the 46,555 units sold in May 2021, the company saw 3X month-on-month (MoM) growth in June 2021, however, we have to consider the fact that several states were under lockdown in May, and it was only in June that we saw showrooms opening up.

The same can be said about year-on-year (YoY) growth. In June 2020, Maruti's total sales stood at 57,428 units and compared to it last month the company saw over 156 per cent growth, but given the fact that the situation was much worse last year due to the nationwide lockdown, it's nothing but an anomaly. Although not technically comparable, as against the 11,262 units exported in May 2021, the company saw a 51 per cent MoM growth in June 2021. Compared to the 4,289 units exported in June 2020, last month's exports were nearly 4 times more.
Sales from the Mini and subcompact segment cars like the S-Presso, Swift, Baleno and Dzire among others, collectively accounted for 86,288 units
Maruti's mini and subcompact segment cars like - Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire collectively accounted for 86,288 units. In comparison, in May 2021 and June 2020 the company sold 25,103 and 37,154 units, respectively. Last month, the company also sold 602 units of the Ciaz sedan, compared to 349 units sold in May 2021, and 553 units sold a year ago in June 2020. Sales from the utility vehicle space, which includes the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Gypsy and S-Cross, stood at 28,172 units. The same for May 2021 was 6,355 units, and 9,764 units in June 2020. As for the van segment, Maruti sold 9,218 units of the Eeco van in June 2021, compared to 1,096 units in May 2021 and 3,803 in June 2020.

In June 2021, Maruti Suzuki also sold 1,916 units of the Super Carry light commercial vehicle, witnessing an 87 per cent YoY growth compared to 1026 units sold in June 2020. In May 2021 the company sold only 868 units of the LCV in India. Last month sales to another OEM, that is Toyota, stood at 4,152 units.
At the end of June, Maruti Suzuki India also closed the first quarter of FY 2021-22 with total sales of 353,614 units. At the same time, the company's Q1 sales for FY 2020-21 stood at 76,599 units, for the same period last year. Sales in the first quarter of both FY2020-21 and FY2021-22 have been far from normal owing to COVID-19 related lockdowns and disruptions and hence any comparison would not be very meaningful.
