Highlights

During that time of the year when carmakers in India go all out to woo customers with attractive discounts and incentives, Delhi folks may be in for a rude awakening. In an attempt to curb the rise in both, the number of vehicles and pollution, the capital's civic bodies are deliberating a hike in one-time parking fee, which is collected by the Delhi government at the time of registration of vehicles.

Delhi is not new to these issues; earlier this year, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had imposed a banned diesel vehicles over 10 years-old and petrol vehicles over 15 years-old from plying in the national capital. More recently, the Supreme Court had asked for the imposition of an environment tax on commercial vehicles venturing into Delhi.

Studies claim that about 7.5 million cars already ply on Delhi's roads, and an average of 1,200 more cars are added every day.

If the latest proposal seeking to grapple with Delhi's traffic and pollution woes is approved, the cost of two-wheelers will go up by at least Rs. 1,000. There's a different array of slabs for cars; cars that cost up to Rs. 4 lakh will pay Rs 8,000, while those with a price tag over that will pay a parking fee in the range of 4-15 per cent.

New Proposed One-Time Parking Fee Rates in Delhi:

    a. Two-wheelers

    - Up to Rs. 60,000: Rs. 1,000

    - Over Rs. 60,000: 2 per cent of the vehicle cost

    b. Cars

    - Up to Rs. 4 lakh: Rs 8,000 (Current Fee: Rs. 2,000)

    - Rs. 4 lakh - Rs. 6 lakh: 4 per cent of vehicle cost/ Rs. 16,000

    - Rs. 8 lakh - Rs. 12 lakh: 6 per cent of vehicle cost/ Rs. 48,000

    - Rs. 12 lakh - Rs. 20 lakh: 8 per cent of vehicle cost/ Rs. 96,000

    - Rs. 20 lakh - Rs. 40 lakh: 10 per cent of vehicle cost/ Rs. 2 lakh

    - Over Rs. 40 lakh: 15 per cent of vehicle cost/ Rs. 6 lakh

P.S: The current parking fee for cars costing over Rs. 4 lakh is Rs. 4,000

    c. Commercial Vehicles

    - Buses: Rs. 32,000 (Current Fee: Rs. 4,000)

    - Auto-Rickshaws: Rs. 2,000/ annum
