Indian Motorcycle Recalls 18,637 Units Over Potential Fire Risk

- The fire could be caused due to a fault in the ignition system
- The recall does not include the Springfield, Scout and Scout Sixty
- Indian Motorcycles could likely extend the recall in India as well
Iconic American motorcycle maker Indian Motorcycle has initiated a voluntary recall involving 18,637 bikes over a potential fire hazard caused due to an issue with the ignition system. The recall involves Indian's range-topping motorcycles including the Chief Classic, Dark Horse, Chieftain, Roadmaster, and Chief Vintage, which were manufactured between April 15, 2013, to June 16, 2015. The new Indian Springfield as well as entry-level Scout and Scout Sixty are not part of the recall.
The ignition system is said to be at fault since there is a possibility that the un-burnt fuel might pass through the exhaust system during a misfire. This, in turn, could lead a potential fire risk if the exhaust temperature increases beyond the limit. Dealerships have commenced contacting customers individually and will be updating the ECU of the affected motorcycles as a fix, with the process being free of cost. While the recall involves bikes overseas, the bike maker's Indian subsidiary hasn't announced a recall as yet. Hence, it isn't clear if models sold in India are part of the recall, which could be a possibility considering the motorcycles make it to the country via the CBU route.
Barring the youngest Scout Sixty which uses a 999cc V-Twin Thunder Stroke engine, all Indian motorcycles use the 1811cc V-Twin Thunder Stroke 111 unit. Resurrected by parent company Polaris, the modern day Indian Motorcycles have found a special place amidst the cruiser lovers for its vintage styling, impeccable craftsmanship and top notch luxury.
As for the Indian operations, Indian Motorcycles recently introduced the Springfield and Scout Sixty in the country priced at Rs. 30.6 lakh and Rs. 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company recently commenced deliveries of the Scout Sixty, while that of the Springfield are slated for September this year. The American manufacturer has also been expanding its presence in India with dealerships set to open in Kochi, Goa, Kolkata and Pune.
