Mass Airflow Sensor- What is it?

The engines require fuel to provide power to the car for motion. Therefore, injecting the correct amount of fuel is imperative; otherwise, the engine might have frequent misfires. Fuel injectors perform the function of providing fuel to the engine. Mass airflow systems control the rate of fuel injection. Without these systems working in robust conditions, the engine will get an inadequate amount of fuel leading to malfunctions. Let us look at some of the signs that can help us judge faulty airflow systems.

What is a mass airflow sensor?
A mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine and provides the information to the car's computer/software system. This system then directs the fuel injectors about the amount of fuel that needs to be injected into the engine. Faulty airflow systems can lead to engine misfires or, in many cases, jerks that occur when the car is in motion.

Detecting The Failure Symptoms For These Sensors
Various signals can be looked for to check any failures in the sensors: -
Engine Light: The engine light is a pretty good indicator for any faults in the system. If the light comes on, it is time to head to the mechanic and get the fault diagnosed.
Jerking/Bumpy Motions: The car starts behaving abnormally if the sensors malfunction. The car's acceleration is not smooth if the engine cannot efficiently ignite the fuel.
Misfiring the engine: The powertrain control module (PCM) managing the engine depends directly on these sensors. There might be too less, or too much oil injected into the engine with faulty sensors, causing it to misfire.
Exhaust smoke: Vehicles are sensitive about the engine's air-fuel mixture. Without the proper mixture, the exhaust emits harmful black smoke into the atmosphere. This is a pretty clear indication that the mass airflow sensor is faulty and is not functioning properly.
Fuel economy: Fuel economy can be a pretty good indicator for various problems taking place inside a car. If the car suddenly needs more fuel than usual, it is safe to assume that the mass airflow sensors are not working properly.

How to fix the problem?
The best solution to faulty airflow sensors includes cleaning the sensors. The first option can be cleaning the sensor with the help of rubbing alcohol. Put the sensor in a bag with an alcohol solution and move it around to remove the dirt and grease from the surface.
The other solution can be buying a special mass airflow sensor cleaner available in repair shops and using that for cleaning purposes! If this does not solve the problem, seeking an expert's opinion is the best solution.
