Mercedes-Benz Starts Production at Brazil Facility
Mercedes-Benz today started production at its new passenger-car plant in Brazil as part of the 'Mercedes-Benz 2020' growth strategy. The first car to roll off the production line at the facility in Iracemapolis, Sao Paulo was a black Mercedes-Benz C-Class. One must note, the German carmaker will soon add the GLA SUV to the production line at its newest facility that currently promises a capacity of 20,000 vehicles per annum.

It must be noted that only 19 months elapsed between the concept decision and the start of production at the new Brazil facility.

Markus Schafer, Member of the Divisional Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management, said, "The opening of the Mercedes-Benz Iracemapolis plant is a further milestone in the development of our flexible and efficient production network. The global production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars comprises 26 locations which are organized in production compounds according to the vehicle architecture. With the local production, we are strengthening our global competitiveness and will be closer to our Brazilian customers and their needs for passenger cars of the premium brand Mercedes-Benz."

While employees from the Brazilian workforce were sent to other Mercedes-Benz plants to familiarise themselves with the production processes, the carmaker's plant in Pune, India, which also produces the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, was one of the leading training locations. One must note, Mercedes-Benz Pune facility had also provided support for the carmaker's plant in Vietnam.

Along with the investment of over BRL 600 million in the new facility in Brazil, Mercedes-Benz also created 600 jobs at the plant.
