Whenever a new model is launched in the market, it is customary to pit it against the segment benchmark. The Hyundai Creta is the king among all the compact SUVs (we are referring to the sales numbers) and the MG Hector which has recently been unveiled will certainly have to battle it out with the Hyundai car in the marketplace. Well, connected car is the buzzword and MG Hector surely has an edge packing ton of features. Exterior And Design

Dimension MG Hector Hyundai Creta
Length 4655 mm 4270 mm
Width 1835 mm 1780 mm
Height 1760 mm 1630 mm
Wheelbase 2750 mm 2590 mm

The MG Hector is bigger than the Hyundai Creta in every dimension and by quite a margin. It is 385 mm longer and has a 160 mm larger wheelbase which translates into a spacious cabin. The Hector is also wider and taller than the Creta which means three people can sit abreast at the rear and will be more comfortable.

g6fmif2gThe MG Hector has the largest footprint in its segment.

The MG Hector looks macho and robust yet has the required sophistication in its finish. As we have earlier said, the overall silhouette is more American despite the brand's British history and Chinese background. The face is dominated by a massive black mesh grille with sleek chrome surroundings and MG has adopted a new design language where the headlamps assembly is mounted in the bumper and the daytime running lights (DRLs) are positioned right on the top, close to the hood. The side of the Hector looks bulbous and the edges are rounded. The 17-inch dual-tone alloys look a size small under the bulging wheel arches. The shoulder line is sharp and all around black claddings with subtle chrome inserts keep the SUV quotient well intact. The rear of the SUV is curvaceous and the tapering rear windscreen along with the wraparound tail lamps also add to the urban looks.

0avorocThe Hyundai Creta is the most popular compact SUV in India.

The Hyundai Creta had received a facelift earlier this year which has made its much-admired urban SUV look even better with a newly profiled bumper and the three-slat cascade grille. It looks wider up-front and side looks very proportionate. Even the Creta gets dual-tone alloy wheels and they look the perfect size. There hasn't been any major change in the side profile and the rear bumper has just been slightly tweaked to fit the skid plate.

Interior

k2tc4hmThe MG Hector gets an all-black cabin and a panoramic sunroof.

The MG Hector gets the all black treatment on the inside and the upholstery is finished in soft-touch leather. The design of the dash and central console looks minimalistic which is majorly due to the large 10.4-inch touchscreen which is the command system for a wide range of features. The longest wheelbase has also translated into a spacious cabin as we mentioned earlier and it gets a large first-in-segment panoramic sunroof.

One of the strongest selling points of the Hyundai Creta is its interiors which is both high on material quality and fit & finish. However, it's been almost four years that we have had the Creta in our market and the design has started looking dated now. Albeit, the cabin still feels airy, thanks to the not so high window line and high positioning of the seats.

The 2.0-litre engine in the MG Hector is the Fiat sourced Multijet unit which also powers other models like the Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass. It churns out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The power figures are significantly higher than the Creta but the Hector is heavier as well. It lacks an automatic transmission in the diesel variant but the petrol gets a 6-speed dual clutch unit which offers smoother shift and lesser power lag compared to Creta's torque converter automatic. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine is also mated to a six-speed manual transmission and develops 141 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. MG is also offering the Hector with a hybrid variant which uses a 48 Volt mild hybrid system. A 48-volt lithium-ion battery helps store energy and provide extra torque assistance of up to 20 Nm when required, resulting in a smoother drive. The combination also helps in reducing emissions by up to 12 per cent using three key functions - Engine Auto Start-Stop, Regenerative Braking and E-Boost.

The Hyundai Creta also has multiple drivetrains it offers. Starting with the diesel, there is a 1.4-litre CRDi engine which produces 88 bhp and 220 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Then there is a more powerful 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, CRDi diesel engine which produces 126 bhp and 260 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and to its advantage has the six-speed torque converter unit as an option in the SX variant. Then there is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, VTVT petrol motor which churns out 121 bhp and 151 Nm of peak torque and even this one is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard while the six-speed automatic is optional on the SX variant.

sr7s1taoThe Hyundai Creta was so far the segment benchmark and has a couple of first-in-segment features like wireless charging among others.

The Hyundai Creta so far was also the segment leader in this department as it packs in a bit extra. The top-end Hyundai Creta also gets a sunroof, wireless charging dock and wristband entry along with all the features that other two are offering such as touchscreen unit which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, engine start-stop button and more. While all these features help it trump others in the competition, the Hector being loaded with connected edge definitely wins here. Having said that, we expect the next-gen Hyundai Creta to feature the connected technology given that Hyundai is already offering it in the upcoming Venue which will be is a subcompact SUV and is positioned below the Creta.
