Key Highlights
- The new Audi A6 and A7 are likely to borrow tech from the new A8
- The new Audi A1 will be larger and more luxurious than the current one
- Audi wil be bringing the new generation A6 and A7 models to India
The all-new Audi A8 has just been unveiled at the ongoing Audi Summit in Barcelona, Spain and the automaker's newest flagship gets an evolutionary design with technological advancements including Matrix LED headlamps, semi-autonomous driving tech, autonomous parking and a hybrid powertrain. While the A8 is certainly stellar, the German auto giant has also made some important announcements at the Audi Summit. Speaking at the unveil, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said that the company has four new models lined up for 2018 including the new generation versions of the A7, A6 and A1. There will also be a new Audi e-Tron joining the line-up.
Out of all models, it is the next generation Audi A6 and A7 that India will get later in the timeline. Starting with the new generation A7, the model was recently spied testing internationally and retains its sportback styling on the new model as well. The styling though will be evolutionary, much like the new A8, so expect to the familial elements there including the sloping bonnet, single-frame hexagonal grille and a wide stance. The cabin is yet to be detailed, but expect a plethora of technological upgrades including touchscreen panels and capacitive buttons, and the Audi Virtual Cockpit of course.
However, the major concentration will be on the new generation Audi A6 that is due for a replacement. The model is expected to be more like downsized version of the just unveiled flagship A8 sedan. So, expect the conservative styling, HD Matrix headlamps, digital console and much more. It will be interesting to see if Audi will pass on some of the Autonomous Intelligence (AI) tech from the A8 to the new A6, especially since compatriots Audi and BMW did pass on some of the tech from its respective flagship sedans to the slightly smaller E-Class and 5 Series. While the A6 is popular for Audi, it only contributes 15 per cent to the company's global sales and that's why it will be extremely important to get the new A6 right. In India too, new generation A6 holds much relevance India as its more popular seller taking on the German rivals and the Volvo S90.
Lastly, Audi is working on its next e-Tron model that has been announced for 2018. While details on the upcoming e-Tron remain sketchy at the moment, it could be electric version of one of its existing cars or spawn an all-new model. Details though are still awaited on the model.

While not exactly relevant for India, the Audi A1 is one of the company's volume products globally. The hatchback will be moving into its second generation next year as a more plush and luxurious offering to take on other mass market hatchbacks. The biggest change will be the new A1 moving to Volkswagen Group's derivative of the MQB platform, called A0. The new platform will help the A1 grow larger in dimensions, while engine options will see comprehensive upgrades with a new 1-litre motor churning out 100 bhp of power. Audi may also introduce the 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Volkswagen Polo on the 2018 A1, while a plug-in hybrid is also under speculation.Lastly, Audi is working on its next e-Tron model that has been announced for 2018. While details on the upcoming e-Tron remain sketchy at the moment, it could be electric version of one of its existing cars or spawn an all-new model. Details though are still awaited on the model.
