The new 2016 Toyota Fortuner has finally been launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 25.92 lakh. It's taken 8 years for the second generation of the car to arrive in India and well, it gets a ton of changes in terms of both cosmetic and mechanical updates.
The 2016 Fortuner SUV is now more equipped in terms of features and fire power to compete with the likes of the new Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe and even the Chevrolet Trailblazer. We've compiled a bunch of interesting details about the car which will certainly give you a better perspective of the car.
- The 2016 Toyota Fortuner is built on the highly modular Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform. This platform has resulted in the new Fortuner being lighter yet stiffer, thereby improving ride, handling.
- The suspension is also all-new, and the new Fortuner uses a most stiff and well configured chassis which makes it hard to believe it is ladder on frame and not monocoque as we found out when we drove it recently.

The New Fortuner comes 7 years after the first generation
- There's a big change in the design department too as the 2016 Toyota Fortuner is now sleeker than before. It gets slim, wraparound, dual-projector headlamps that flow into a newly designed twin-slat chrome grille. The refreshed front bumper includes chrome accented fog lamps and LED DRLs
- The high shoulder line, large wheel arches, and 12 spoke alloy wheels all try and add a bit of muscle but clearly even we can see it isn't butch enough.

- The 2016 Toyota Fortuner gets an electric tailgate and LED tail-lamps
-
There are changes on the inside too as the cabin sees generous use of soft-touch materials and leather seats. You can check it out in our photo gallery.
- The 2016 Toyota Fortuner receives a large touchscreen infotainment system display which sits in the centre of the dash. Controls for the air conditioning system are located below it while the four spoke steering wheel sees mounted telephony and audio controls.
New Fortuner Cabin

- Toyota Fortuner will get both diesel and petrol engine options that currently power the Innova Crysta, which we reviewed few month ago. While the diesel version comes with the meaty 177bhp, 2.8-litre GD-Series oil burner developing 360Nm of torque, the petrol trim gets the new 2.7-litre gasoline motor that makes 164bhp and develops 245Nm of peak torque.
- Both the petrol and the diesel engines are now more fuel efficient than before. While the petrol returns 10.01 km/l(AT) and 10.24 km/l (MT), the diesel is good enough for 14.24km/l (MT) and 12.9 km/l (AT)
New Fortuner Engine

- Transmission duties will be handled by either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Fortuner SUV is also available in an optional 4x4 in the diesel trim. The gearbox is not sluggish, but is slow - and in typical Toyota fashion has long ratios.
- In an attempt to reduce costs by increasing localisation, Toyota is planning on assembling its diesel engines at its facility in Bidadi, Karnataka. This should see the localisation percentage jump beyond the 80 per cent mark
- The New Toyota Fortuner will compete with other premium SUVs like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Hyundai Santa Fe apart from the Ford Endeavour, and Chevrolet Trailblazer and we've put together a specifications comparison to put things into perspective.
New Fortuner vs rivals

- There are two more cars coming to India which will rival the Fortuner, the Skoda Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan. Now we've told you all about the Kodiaq recently and we've already driven the Tiguan so we can judge that these two cars will be formidable rivals to the Fortuner.
