September 2016 Car Sales: Maruti Sees Highest Ever September Growth

- Maruti Suzuki grew by 31.1% by selling 1,49,143 units in September 2016
- Honda Car India sold 15,439 units in September 2016
- Honda Car India sales de-grew by almost 20%
The month of September 2016 has been a mixed bag so far. While Maruti Suzuki has had a great month with over 31 per cent growth, Honda Car India saw a drop in sales by almost 20 per cent, when compared to September 2015. Keep watching this space as we bring you up to date with the performance of other manufacturers for the month that just went by.
1. Maruti Suzuki:
Going into festive season India's leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has announced that it sold a total of 1,49,143 units in September 2016, registering a growth of 31.1 per cent over the same period of the last fiscal. This includes 1,37,321 units sold in the domestic market and 11,822 units that have been exported. The company had sold a total of 1,13,759 units in September 2015. Maruti Suzuki also sold over 18,000 units in UV space dominated by the Vitara Brezza. The introduction of the special editions of the Alto and the Swift has helped the company to register a growth of over 24 per cent and 12.3 per cent in mini and compact car segments. This is also the company's highest ever total sales (Domestic sales along with exports) for the month of September ever.
2. Honda Car India Limited:
On the other hand, Honda sold a total of 15,439 units in September 2016 which include 15,034 units sold domestically and 405 units exported as compared to 18,509 units sold in the corresponding month of last year. This reveals a de-growth of approximately 20 per cent. The highest selling Honda model in September 2016 was the City, with 5,855 units sold.
Speaking on the company's performance, Yoichiro Ueno, president and CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. said that, "Honda's sales have been steadily growing during the past few months. Our enquiry levels have seen a significant increase since the beginning of this festival season and we are looking forward to continuing good sales momentum through Oct'16. We are offering a lot of exciting promotions on our cars to make this festive season more attractive and rewarding for our customers. "
3. Tata Motors:

Indian auto major Tata Motors announced an 8 per cent increase in total sales at 48,648 units in September this year, when compared to 45,215 units sold during the same period last year. In a statement, Tiago maker said, “Domestic sales of Tata Motors' commercial and passenger vehicles grew 5 per cent to 42,961 units in September over the same month of the previous year. Sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market grew 24 per cent to 14,601 units last month as against 11,732 units in the year-ago period."
In the commercial vehicles segment, the company's domestic sales were down by 2 per cent at 28,360 units, while exports during the month increased by 29 per cent at 5,687 units compared with 4,402 units sold in September 2015. The automaker has been enjoying the growth in passenger vehicles largely with the success of the Tiago, even as the remainder of the passenger vehicles continue to bring in modest numbers. The company is now gearing up to launch its second launch for the current fiscal, the Hexa, towards the end of the year.
With the festive season here, the company is now looking to maintain the good sales momentum in October and November as well.
3. Mahindra
Mahindra KUV100
Mahindra's overall auto sales (Domestic +Exports) for September 2016 stood at 46,130 units compared to 42,848 units during September 2015 registering a growth of 8 per cent month-on-month. The company sold 20,537 vehicles last month as against 19,564 units in September 2015.
The company has achieved a growth of 11 per cent in the first two quarters of the on-going financial year which ended on September 30, 2016. Exports for September 2016 stood at 3,585 vehicles, a growth of 14 per cent and cumulatively a growth of 18 per cent during the first six months of the FY16-17.
Commenting on the auto sales performance for September 2016, Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive), M&M Ltd. said, "A good and near normal spread of monsoon as well as new vehicle launches have helped the auto industry perform positively. We do hope that the upcoming festive season brings in better demand due to improved sentiments. We are happy to have achieved an 11 per cent growth during the first six months of the current financial in spite of the various uncertainties and challenges. Our exports during the six month period have seen a good growth of 18 per cent. We hope to continue this momentum for the remaining part of the year."
4. Hyundai
Hyundai Elantra
Hyundai Motor India Ltd registered the domestic sales of 42,605 units and exports of 16,606 with cumulative sales of 59,211 units for the month of September 2016.
Commenting on the September sales Mr. Rakesh Srivastava, Sr. Vice President Sales and Marketing, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. said, "Hyundai with a domestic volume of 42,605 units in September '16 registered highest ever sales of 370,448 units for the CY (Jan-Sep '16) with a sustained growth of 7.9% with a strong portfolio of Modern Premium products led by Creta, Elite i20 and Grand. We hope that the festive season will see a benchmark growth in the industry with the evenly spread monsoon along with the 7th Pay commission building to positive sentiments in the market."
