Suzuki Katana Concept Breaks Cover

Suzuki took the wraps off the Katana 3.0 concept recently. For those who do not know, the Katana was one of the most iconic motorcycle models of the 80s. Now Suzuki is mulling whether they should actually think of making a production model of the Katana 3.0 concept, which is based on the regular GSX-S1000F.

The Katana was one iconic Suzuki model from the 80s. And now, the Japanese company has re-introduced the Katana brand, albeit as a concept model. Suzuki recently took the wraps off the Katana concept made by renowned motorcycle designer, Rodolfo Frascoli. He was the brains behind many motorcycle designs, from various brands such as Moto Guzzi, Triumph and so on. The Katana 3.0 is actually the GSX-S1000F, simply re-designed. But nonetheless, the boffins at Suzuki are looking if manufacturing the bike makes sense or not.

The design of the Katana 3.0 is clearly inspired from Suzuki's Katana endurance race bike of the 80s. The styling is pretty slick with the semi-fairing job, which adds to the lean-mean, retro look of the bike. The rear too sees a change in style and now has more of a café-racer look than a naked sportbike. One could also say that the styling language is starkly different from the regular big Suzuki bikes, which have always had a portly look, no doubt complimented with a madly powerful engine.

The GSX-S1000F, the bike on which the Katana 3.0 is based, gets a 999 cc in-line four engine, which makes close to 148 bhp at 10,000 rpm and churns out a peak torque of 108 Nm at 9,500 rpm and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Should Suzuki actually look at bringing the Katana 3.0 as a production model, the biggest challenge it will face is to make the bike appeal to the target audience, who might not know of the significance of the 'Katana'.
