Toyota Discontinues The Yaris Sedan In India; Plans To Launch New Models In 2022

Toyota Kirloskar Motors today announced its decision to discontinue the Toyota Yaris sedan in India. The Japanese carmaker has ceased production of the compact sedan effective from September 27, 2021. Toyota says that the move is part of the company's new product strategy, under which the company plans to launch some new Toyota models in India in 2022. The carmaker has announced that it will continue to offer after-sales support to existing Yaris customers through its dealer service outlets across the country. Additionally, the company will continue to offer Toyota genuine spare parts for the discontinued Yaris, at least for the next 10 years.

In its official statement, Toyota Kirloskar Motors said, "This move is a part of Toyota's product strategy to continue to cater to the ever-evolving needs of the customer through enhanced technologies and product offerings. In every sense, the Yaris is truly a top-class, versatile sedan. Ever since its India debut, the Yaris built on Toyota's QDR philosophy, won the hearts of the customers with its stunning style & design, leading features, low maintenance cost and unmatchable drivability, thus creating a unique ownership experience. We thank all our customers for their support and placing their trust in the brand. We would like to continue to serve such customers with other current offerings and preparations are underway to launch new Toyota models in the coming new year 2022."

The Yaris sedan is expected to be replaced by a Toyota-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, in India

While this is a big announcement, it does not come as a surprise because there were already talks about replacing the Yaris with a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Under the company's partnership with Suzuki Motor Corporation, the company has already launched the Toyota badged Baleno, which was renamed Glanza, and the Vitara Brezza, which was re-badged as Urban Cruiser. While the details are still scarce, earlier this year the company trademarked the name Toyota Belta in India, and that is speculated to be the name of the Toyota-badged Ciaz. We have already seen leaked photos of the Ciaz's grille with Toyota's logo that confirm the speculations. We expect the sedan to be launched in early 2022.

In its statement, Toyota also said, "In addition, over the last two decades, we have been harnessing our manufacturing capabilities to bring in world-class products to Indian consumers. As a part of this endeavour, we will continue to leverage our leadership and vast expertise in cleaner technologies to refresh our product portfolio to meet the evolving customer choices and enable a greener mobility."

While the company hasn't made any direct commitment to launch electric vehicles in the country, earlier this year, Toyota also filed trademarks for the entire range of BZ model names in India. Globally, the bZ or Beyond Zero series signifies the company's new electric vehicle range, which will see the launch of seven new electric models by 2025. Toyota had unveiled a concept version of the bZ4X, which will be the first model in the bZ series. Given the push electric vehicles are receiving in India, Toyota could consider bringing the electric SUV to our shores as well.
