Toyota Pips BMW To Become Most Searched Car Brand In 2020, Kia Tops India

- Toyota reignited the search mindshare with 34.8 per cent of all queries
- BMW still led an aggregate of three years starting from 2018
- Kia was the most searched automaker in India
Out of 21 of the most famous car brands in the world, according to a report by the Burrow, Toyota has overtaken BMW as the most searched car brand in the world in 2020. Interestingly, Hyundai's subsidiary Kia has been on a tear in India since its launch in 2019 due to the success of the Seltos and Sonet subcompact SUVs which made it the most searched brand in India in 2020.
The Kia Seltos has quickly become one of the best selling SUVs in India
The report was compiled by analysing the Google trends data from 158 countries from the years 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Toyota easily came on top in the global rankings with it getting more than a third of the results in its favour sitting pretty at 34.8 per cent. Interestingly, in 2018, Toyota had 41.1 per cent of the results in its favour but for some reason, it had a massive drop in 2019 to 17.7 per cent. Toyota had an improved portfolio of vehicles which could have caused this revival.
BMW's combination of luxury and sporty persona has been timeless which has led to its popularity
BMW was overtaken but its overall lead was massive when seen across three years. In 2019, it commanded almost 74.8 per cent market share, but by 2020, its popularity dropped to 21.5 per cent. Over the course of the 3-year period, BMW had a 38.3 per cent searches in its favour as compared to 31.3 per cent for Toyota.
Kia in India was the most searched perhaps because of the launch of the brand in 2019 and renewed momentum in 2020. Interestingly, the report doesn't cite Tesla which became the most valuable automaker in the world in 2020 but does note that Ford was the most searched brand in North America.
