Auto Industry Registers Positive Growth In April-August 2017: SIAM Report

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers a.k.a. SIAM today released the vehicle sales report for the month of August 2017. Passenger vehicle sales in April-August 2017 period grew 8.67 per cent over the same period last year.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers a.k.a. SIAM today released the vehicle sales report for the month of August 2017. The overall industry registered positive sales figures last month and the two-wheeler industry, in particular, saw double digit growth in the domestic market compared to sales in August 2016. The industry produced a total of 11.95 lakh (11,950,356) vehicles between April-August 2017, against 10.91 lakh (10,919,510) vehicles produced during the same period last year, registering a total growth of 9.44 per cent.

Between April 2017 and August 2017, the total passenger vehicle sales in India grew by 8.67 per cent and within this, passenger cars' sales went up by 6.57 per cent, utility vehicle sales grew by 15.97 per cent, and passenger vans' sales grew by 2.27 per cent. In August alone, passenger vehicle sales grew by 13.76 per cent with the industry registering a total sale of 2.94 lakh vehicles, against the 2.58 lakh vehicles sold in August 2016.

Two-wheeler market, on the other hand, registered double digit growth in April-August 2017 period at 10.41 per cent, compared to April-August 2016 sales. Sales of scooter and motorcycles grew by an impressive 18.27 per cent and 7.89 per cent respectively, while Moped sales went down by 8.6 per cent, in April-August 2017. Having said that, last month alone, the industry sold 18.91 lakh two-wheelers in the country, against the 16.48 lakh units sold in August 2016 registering a growth of 14.69 per cent.

Two-wheeler sales went up by 10.41 per cent in April-August 2017 

As for the commercial vehicle market, sales in April-August 2017 period by just 1.58 per cent, against the same months last year. While the sale of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) grew by 12.37 per cent in the first quarter of FY 2018, the sale of Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) declined by 13.6 per cent. In August 2017 though the total commercial vehicle sales shot up by 23.22 per cent with the industry selling 65,310 vehicles, against the 53,001 units sold in August 2016.

The three-wheelers market was the only segment that saw a considerable drop in sales in April-August 2017, against April-August 2016. Total sales in the said time period went down by 16.26 per cent over the same time last year. Although in August 2017 alone, the segment saw a decent growth of 2.51 per cent with the industry selling 51,451 units compared to the 50,193 units sold in August 2016.

Commercial vehicle sales in April-August 2017 grew by 1.58 per cent

As for the exports, the overall industry saw a growth 10.27 per cent in April-August 2017, against the total number of vehicles exported in April-August 2016. While export of passenger vehicles grew by a decent 2.62 per cent, two-wheeler exports grew by a considerable 13.82 per cent. Export of three-wheelers though went by a huge 17.27 per cent in April-August 2017, while commercial vehicle exports declined by a massive 33.08 per cent in the same period. In August 2017 alone, the industry exported a total of 3.32 lakh vehicles against the 3.10 lakh vehicles exported in August 2016, registering a growth of 7.24 per cent.
