Auto Sales January 2022: Maruti Suzuki's Volume Drops 4% YoY Amidst Chip Shortage And Stiff Competit

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest automaker by volume, has reported achieving cumulative sales of 154,379 units in January 2022. Compared to the 160,752 vehicles sold during the same month in 2021, the Indo-Japanese carmaker witnessed a year-on-year decline of nearly 4 per cent. At the same time, compared to the 153,149 units sold in December 2021, the month-on-month difference in sales remained flat. Maruti Suzuki says that the shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles, mainly affecting domestic numbers.

All that said, we also must consider the fact the long waiting period on Maruti Suzuki cars is deterring consumer sentiments. Additionally, the company is also facing stiff competition from the likes of Tata Motors, which has recorded its highest ever passenger vehicle (PV) sales in January 2022, with a growth of 51 per cent YoY.

Maruti Suzuki India's total PV sales stood at 128,924 units, a 7.2 per cent decline compared to 139,002 units sold in January 2021
As for domestic sales, last month Maruti Suzuki India's total PV sales stood at 128,924 units, a 7.2 per cent decline compared to 139,002 units sold in January 2021. Whereas, total domestic sales, PV sales + LCV sales + Sales to other manufacturers (Toyota), reached 136,442 units. Compared to the 148,307 vehicles sold during the same month in 2021, the company saw a decline of 8 per cent YoY. However, exports numbers continued to be the silver lining for Maruti Suzuki India in January 2022, which was a dark cloud situation. Last month, the carmaker exported 17,937 vehicles from India, a massive 44 per cent compared to the 12,445 exported in January 2021.

The utility vehicle segment, which includes the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Gypsy and S-Cross, also saw a decent 11.4 per cent growth in January 2022
Maruti's mini and subcompact segment, which includes cars like - Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire - collectively accounted for 90,106 units, a nearly 12 per cent decline compared to 102,088 units sold in January 2021. At the same time, the sales from Maruti's compact sedan Ciaz saw a healthy 24 per cent growth at 1,666 units, against 1,347 units sold in January 2021. The utility vehicle segment, which includes the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Gypsy and S-Cross, also saw a decent 11.4 per cent growth last month. The cumulative sales stood at 26,624 units, as against 23,887 units sold during the same month last year.

In January 2022, Maruti Suzuki also sold 10,528 units of the Eeco van, a decline of 10 per cent compared to the 11,680 vans sold during the same month in 2021. Last month, sales to other OEMs, that is Toyota, stood at 3,981 units, a 30 per cent decline compared to the 5,703 units sold in January 2021. Sales from Maruti Suzuki's Super Carry light commercial vehicle reached 3,537 units, a marginal 1.8 per cent decline compared to 3,602 units sold in January 2021.
