BMW i4 Secures Four Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Tests

In the latest round of crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP the BMW i4 scored a four-star crash protection rating. The sedan’s rating was pulled down owing to it missing out on some crash avoidance points securing just 64 per cent of the total points. “BMW’s battery electric compact executive car i4 shows that luxury does not always means better safety performance. Equipped with a similar sensor set to the 3 Series tested in 2019, the gran sedan missed out on some critical crash avoidance points and achieved a 4-star rating,” Euro NCAP said.
The sedan’s performance in occupant protection was notable better securing 87 per cent scores for both adult and child occupant protection. Euro NCAP noted that the i4 provided occupants with good to adequate protection to all key areas in the frontal mobile progressive deformable barrier and full width barrier test. Side mobile barrier and pole impact tests secured similar results with good protection to occupants and adequate in terms of body excursion. The agency noted that car lacked any system to prevent occupant to occupant injuries.
For child occupant protection, the i4 secured full points for crash test performance based on the 6- and 10-year-old dummies. The car though lost out on points for the child restraint system with only ISOFIX and i-Size available on the rear outboard seats.
The i4 secured a 71 per cent rating for vulnerable road user protection with Euro NCAP saying the active bonnet offered good to adequate protection in case of an impact with a pedestrian. The agency though noted that hip protection was poor. The autonomous emergency braking system and road user detection system meanwhile performed adequately.
Coming to the safety systems, the tests provided good to adequate results “with impacts avoided or mitigated in many test scenarios.” The agency though noted that the car lacked a system to apply the brakes to prevent a secondary collision.
The company also published results for tests for other models as well with the Toyota Aygo X also being awarded a four-star rating. Among the cars tested were the new Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV, the new Kia Sportage and the Mercedes-Benz T-Class and Citan – all of which walked away with a full five-star rating.
