BMW Motorrad Posts Record Sales In 2016

- BMW Motorrad posts 5.9 per cent growth
- European markets strongest for BMW
- US market shows a decline
BMW Motorrad has posted another record sales year, the German two wheeler manufacturer's sixth record sales in a row. In all, BMW Motorrad sold 1,45,032 motorcycles and scooters in 2016, registering a 5.9 per cent growth over the previous year, when BMW sold 1,36,963 units. Home market Germany remains BMW Motorrad's largest market, selling 24,894 units, while France is a strong market as well, with 13,350 units.
BMW also saw a 10 per cent increase in sales in Italy, selling 12,300 units in 2016. Overall, the European market has grown 7.5 per cent for BMW Motorrad in 2016, with Spain posting 19.4 per cent growth with 9,520 units and 8,782 units sold in the UK, a growth of 7.1 per cent. Asia is also a strong market for BMW Motorrad with China seeing 52.7 per cent growth at 4,580 units, followed by Thailand posting 42.1 per cent growth with 1,819 units. However, sales in the US have dropped by 16 per cent in 2016, down from 16,330 units in 2015 to 13,730 units in 2016.

In terms of models, the boxer engine-d R-series continues to be a sales driver for BMW Motorrrad, accounting for 52.6 per cent of overall sales, with 77,787 motorcycles sold, with the BMW R1200GS accounting for 25,336 units. The BMW R1200GS Adventure sold 21,391 units, registering 18.8 per cent growth for this model over the previous year. The other big seller is the S-series motorcycles, accounting for 16.3 per cent of BMW Motorrad's sales. The BMW S1000RR sold 9,016 units, followed by S1000R with 5,835 units and S1000XR with 8,835 units.
BMW Motorrad intends to push a new model offensive in 2017, offering 14 new or revised models, including the baby GS - the BMW G 310 GS later in 2017. The G 310 GS, along with its street-based variant G 310 R will be made in India, developed jointly with TVS Motor Company. BMW also plans to increase its worldwide dealer network to 1500 and targeting 200,000 sales by 2020.
