Maruti Suzuki India has announced production figures for the month of June 2021. The country's leading carmaker said its total production increased by 226 per cent to 1,65,576 units in June against 50,742 units produced in the same month last year. Do note that the country was under a near-total lockdown in May 2021 affecting production. In June 2020, we had come out of a nationwide lockdown. So, the abnormal growth could be regarded as an anomaly or a one-off event.

In May 2021, Maruti Suzuki's total sales stood at 40,924 units.
In a regulatory filing, Maruti Suzuki India said, "Production figures of June 2021 to be seen in the context that the Company advanced its maintenance shutdown, which is usually scheduled for June in any normal year, to May 2021. Also, the production in June 2020 was far from normal owing to COVID-19 related lockdowns and disruptions. Hence comparison of June 2021 production figures with that of any previous year would not be very meaningful."
The company produced 40,924 units in May 2021 against 165,576 units, witnessing a month-on-month (MoM) growth of over 300 per cent. The total number of passenger vehicles manufactured last month were 1,63,037 units in comparison to 49,476 units in the corresponding month last year, witnessing a triple-digit growth of 229 per cent.
The production of mini hatchbacks including the Alto and the S-Presso stood at 26,316 units last month as against 10,048 units in June last year, witnessing a massive growth of 161 per cent. Coming to the utility vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki produces cars such as Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza, Jimny and XL6. The company registered a triple-digit growth of 269.7 per cent at 35,917 units as compared to 9,714 units manufactured in the same month last year. At the same time, production of the Maruti Ciaz stood at 1,166 units in June 2021, as compared to 363 units in June 2020.
