New BMW iX3 To Offer Up To 800 Km Range, Support 400kW Fast Charging; Debut In September 2025

BMW has shared new details about its first ‘Neue Klasse’ SUV, the all-new iX3 as it nears its global debut at the IAA Mobility Show 2025. The carmaker has now revealed new details in regard to the SUV’s powertrain and onboard tech, including some autonomous systems.

Starting with the powertrain, BMW has revealed that the ‘Neue Klasse’ iX3 will support up to 400 kW DC fast charging, adding up to 350 km of range in as little as 10 mins. The electric SUV will support charging at both 400 V and 800 V chargers. Interestingly, BMW says that the SUV will also feature an 'intelligent charging flap’ that will automatically open when it senses the owner’s intent to charge and shut by itself when the charger is removed. The tech also features AI support, enabling the car to learn when to open the port based on location and owner preferences.

Furthermore, the iX3 will support bi-directional charging, including Vehicle-to-Vehicle, Vehicle-to-Load (at up to 3.7 kW) and Vehicle-to-Grid. The latter will be supported via a new bi-directional 19.2 kW DC wallbox charger provided by BMW.

Coming to the range, BMW says that the current prototype of the iX3 50 xDrive is capable of reaching up to 800 km in a single charge based on WLTP estimates. The carmaker had previously said that its Neue Klasse cars would offer a range of over 600 km. Final battery capacities, however, still remain under wraps.

On the tech front, the iX3 is already confirmed to debut some new in-car technologies such as a panoramic display at the base of the windshield, a new steering wheel with touch-sensitive multifunction buttons, 3D heads-up display and Matrix lighting technology for the new-gen central touchscreen.

The company, however, detailed some of the ADAS functions set to be offered. All units of the iX3 will feature tech such as lane change warning, road priority warning and safe exit. Safe Exit uses side-mounted radars to identify and warn drivers of vehicles approaching alongside the car.

Other features made available will include expansive hands-free driving capabilities, including driving on highways, following preselected routes on the car’s navigation system, and even in city driving conditions with stop-and-go traffic. Additionally, BMW has said that the iX3 will feature a new ‘Symbiotic driver assistance’ system, meaning that user inputs at the accelerator or brakes will not deactivate the self-driving systems.

The new iX3 will make its public debut in September this year and will be followed by by the all-electric ‘Neue Klasse’ 3 Series next year.
