2022 Volvo XC40 Mild Hybrid, XC90 Plug-in Hybrid Facelift India Launch Date Announced

- Updated XC40 to get design updates in line with the new XC40 Recharge
- Will be powered by a new mild-hybrid turbo-petrol engine
- Volvo to also launch the updated XC90 Plug-in Hybrid
Following the launch of the all-electric XC40 Recharge, Volvo Cars India is set to launch the updated internal combustion engine XC40 with a mild-hybrid system in India on September 21. Along with that, Volvo will also launch the updated XC90 plug-in hybrid on the same date. The updated XC40 will get cosmetic updates and get new petrol engines under the bonnet while the XC90 PHEV will receive updates that will bring it in line with the updated XC90 mild-hybrid launched last year. The company had not updated the T8 plug-in hybrid variant when it launched the facelifted XC90 in India last year.
Starting with the styling, the updated XC40 will get a revised front fascia with redesigned headlamps with the Thor’s Hammer DRLs along with a revised front bumper and grille. The updated SUV could also get redesigned alloy wheels for India along with the option of new paint shades.

The cabin meanwhile is expected to get only trim and upholstery changes with the clean and uncluttered design being carried forward. Volvo could however update the tech on offer inside the cabin.
Coming to the engine, the new XC40 is expected to get the new 2.0-litre mild-hybrid turbo petrol engine. In global markets, the mild-hybrid engine option is available in three states of tune – B3, B4, and B5 developing between 161 bhp and 247 bhp in front or all-wheel drive configurations. Given the current SUV is available in the two-wheel drive T4 spec, we expect Volvo to offer the two-wheel drive B4 variant in the Indian market.
The 2022 Volvo XC40 facelift will go up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 when it goes on sale.
The XC90 PHEV or XC90 Recharge T8 as it is called by Volvo, will get styling updates in line with last year's XC90 Mild-Hybrid. The PHEV will receive minor styling updates to the interior and exterior along with offering additional features that were added to the XC90 range with the facelift.
Coming to the powerplant, the XC90 Recharge will pair a 306 bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 107kW electric motor to drive all four wheels. The SUV will get an onboard 18.8 kWh battery pack that will give it an all-electric driving range of up to a claimed 73km. As with the current XC90 PHEV, expect the updated model to be available with three rows of seating.
