After airbags, Toyota India has now decided to offer anti-lock braking system (ABS) as a standard feature across its lineup. This move might make Toyota the only brand in India to offer ABS as a standard safety equipment. Though the company hasn't revealed exactly when that will come into effect, it intends to introduce the feature at the earliest.

Furthermore, the company is likely to conduct crash tests similar to the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) on its Indian product lineup. Toyota has plans to improve pedestrian safety, too. All these safety measures will not only improve the safety standards of Toyota cars, but will also help them get the competitive edge over their respective rivals.

Though compulsion of ABS could be first in the industry, Volkswagen and Toyota India have been offering airbags as standard safety feature across the line-up. Such initiatives will surely help bring down the number of road fatalities in India. And once BNVSAP (Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program) comes into place, cars in India will get even safer. The committee working on this is planning to draft policies similar to the European car safety rules, and mandate frontal and side impact crash testing at 56kmph. It is likely to be enforced by April, 2017.
