Car Sales May 2021: Maruti Suzuki Reports Total Sales of 46,555 Units Amidst COVID-19 Lockdown

- Maruti Suzuki's total sales for May 2021 stood at 46,555 units
- Maruti's domestic sales was 33,771 units & sale to other OEMs 1,522 units
- Maruti Suzuki India's total exports for May 2021 was 11,262 units
Maruti Suzuki India has released the monthly sales numbers for May 2021, registering total sales of 46,555 units. The decline in numbers is a direct result of the second wave of the covid-19 pandemic and near-total lockdown imposed by several states. In fact, following government directives, the company had to shut production from May 1 to May 16 to divert oxygen from industrial use for medical purposes. As a result, compared to the company's total sales of 159,691 units registered in April 2021, Maruti Suzuki India saw a Month-on-Month (MoM) decline of 71 per cent. Having said that, compared to 18,539 units sold in May 2020, Maruti witnessed a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 60 per cent, however, one must not forget that India was still coming out of a nationwide lockdown, so this growth is an anomaly.

Sales from the entry-level models, compact hatchbacks and subcompact sedans accounted for 25,103 units
Maruti Suzuki's sales in the domestic market alone stood at 33,771 units, which compared to the 137,151 units sold in India in April 2021, is a 75 per cent de-growth. However, even though an anomaly, compared to 13,865 units sold in May 2020, the company witnessed a YoY growth of 59 per cent in domestic sales. Sales from the entry-level models, compact hatches and subcompact sedans accounted for 25,103 units, while the company sold 349 units of the Ciaz compact sedan. Sales from the utility vehicle space, which includes the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Gypsy and S-Cross, stood at 6,355.

At the same time the Eeco Van and the company light commercial vehicle, Super Carry, accounted for 1096 and 868 units, respectively. The company's sales of Baleno and Vitara Brezza to Toyota stood at 1,522 units. As for exports, the company sold 11,262 units in May 2021, which is a nearly 35 per cent decline compared to 17,237 units exported in April 2021, but a growth of 59 per cent compared to 4,651 vehicles exported in May 2020.
Maruti Suzuki India says that since neither of the two months had normal production, the sales volume of May 2021 is not comparable with May 2020.
