Car Sales May 2021: Kia India Registers 31% Drop In Domestic Sales M-o-M

- Kia India's total sales for May 2021 stood at 11,050 units
- Compared to April 2021, when Kia sold 16,111 units, it saw a 31% decline
- In May 2021, Kia launched the updated Sonet and Seltos models
Kia India has released the monthly sales numbers for May 2021, registering domestic sales of 11,050 units. Compared to 16,111 vehicles sold in April 2021, the South Korean carmaker has witnessed a Month-on-Month (MoM) decline of 31 per cent. This decline is a direct result of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic which has led to a near-total lockdown in several states, affecting production and sales. As for Year-on-Year (YoY) growth, compared to 1661 units sold in May 2020, Kia witnessed an 85 per cent growth, however, it's nothing by an anomaly.

Last year, in May 2020, India was still coming out of a nationwide lockdown, so it's not ideal to compare the two months. Furthermore, back then, the Sonet, which is right now one of Kia's top-sellers, was still not part of the company's line-up. All that said, Kia, says that despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company managed to achieve a market share of 10.7 per cent in May 2021, its highest-ever so far. Last month, Kia sold 6,627 units of the Sonet, and 4,277 units of the Seltos.

Commenting on the company's sales performance, Tae-Jin Park, Chief Sales and Business Strategy Officer, Kia India said, "We are pleased with our sales performance during this challenging environment. The ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic made things tough for all businesses and the automobile industry was no exception, as normal business operations got disturbed. In these tough times, the relentless efforts of our teams and partners enabled Kia India to achieve its highest ever market share of 10.7 per cent. We are confident that the need for personal mobility and pent-up demand will drive the recovery for the entire industry in the months to come."
