Let's start with what’s under the skin. The 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine is now backed up by an electric motor, bumping output to 457 bhp and 790 Nm – up from 403 bhp and 650 Nm offered by the non-hybrid V6. This makes the LC 300 Hybrid the most powerful variant of the Land Cruiser on sale in the world today. As before, power is still sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Also, if the powertrain does sound familiar, do note that Lexus debuted the same powertrain in its flagship, the LX, late last year. The LX is the sister model to the Land Cruiser.

Moving to cosmetics, the Land Cruiser Hybrid gets a revised front bumper with greater use of black trim elements along the lower surfaces and near the fog lamps. The boot lid also wears a ‘HEV’ badge used by all Toyota strong hybrids. Inside, the LC300 Hybrid gets a new 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 220V AC inverter outlet in the boot to plug in appliances. The remainder of the car looks pretty much unchanged.

The new Land Cruiser Hybrid is expected to go on sale alongside the standard petrol and diesel variants in global markets. Moving to the Indian market, Toyota launched an updated Land Cruiser earlier this year, bumping up the equipment levels in the standard ZX trim and adding a new off-road oriented GR-S trim as well. The India-spec car features a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine that pushes out 304 bhp and 700 Nm.
