Tata Motors To Manufacture 2 Lakh EVs Annually At Ford's Sanand Plant: Report

It was in March that we first heard about Tata Motors showing interest in Ford's (now defunct, since the company seized manufacturing operations in India) Sanand facility. Last time around we told you that the deal was in the final stages of acquisition, and the news will be officially announced by both carmakers soon, once the Gujarat state government reviews the proposal for the sale. However, more details have emerged now. According to a report in The Times Of India, Tata Motors is looking to produce 2 lakh electric cars annually at Ford's Sanand plant.

Tata's Sanand facility currently manufactures the Tigor, Tiago and Tigor EV
The report further states that Tata Motors intends to invest an additional Rs 2,000 crore and wants to achieve this 2 lakh EVs manufacturing milestone by 2026. Tata Motors has assured the Gujarat government that none of the employees from the Ford facility will be laid off. An email sent to Tata Motors confirming these developments has remained unanswered.
Tata Motors was one of the first entrants in Gujarat's Sanand, and had invested Rs. 4500 crore in the facility to build the Nano. Currently, the plant manufactures the Tiago, Tigor, and Tigor EV and has an annual capacity of 1.5 lakh units. The company currently manufactures about 10,000 EVs a year at the Sanand plant and now with the new investment in Ford's Sanand facility, the company is looking poised to take on the EV ecosystem by storm.
