Toyota - in a partnership with Maruti Suzuki - has finally entered the ever-so-competitive compact SUV segment in India, and the two jointly developed SUVs are gearing up to pull numbers as they are the only ones currently to have strong hybrid powertrains in the segment. Of the two, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has beaten the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara to the market, as Toyota has announced the prices for the top variants of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, while the prices for the base variants will be announced at a later date. The top variant of the mild hybrid drivetrain of the Hyryder is priced at Rs. 17.09 lakh (Ex-showroom). On the other hand, the 3 variants of the strong hybrid drive train are priced between Rs. 15.11 lakh to Rs. 18.99 lakh (Ex-showroom).

    Hyundai Creta & Kia Seltos:

Hyundai Creta is one of the most popular compact SUVs in India.

At launch, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder goes up against a plethora of compact SUVs in the Indian market. Not just that, there are also a few mid-size SUVs in the price range too. Starting off with the compact SUVs, Hyryder faces tough competition from the likes of the Korean twins, the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. Both the SUVs are very popular, and are rich in comfort and features. They also score high in practicality as they're big on space.

Kia Seltos set the tone for the brand in India, and is its best-selling model.

    Volkswagen Taigun & Skoda Kushaq:

Volkswagen Taigun was the VW group's first car under its India 2.0 strategy.

Following them are the two SUVs under the Volkswagen group, those being the Volkswagen Taigun & the Skoda Kushaq. The two SUVs were launched in India last year under the group's India 2.0 strategy, and are underpinned by the versatile and highly localised MQB-A0-IN platform. The compact SUVs are half a size smaller than their rivals, but bet them in many aspects, like luxury and driver engagement.

The Skoda Kushaq is also underpinned by the highly localised MQB-A0-IN platform.

    Tata Harrier:

Then there's the only compact SUV from an Indian manufacturer on sale currently, the Tata Harrier. The Harrier packs a lot of performance and is larger, compared to the other compact SUVs. It also has a lot of features on offer, and comes with a tank-like built quality, which also propelled the car to a 5-star Global NCAP crash test score, making it one of the safest cars in India.

The Tata Harrier is the only compact SUV by an Indian manufacturer on sale in India currently.

    MG Hector:

The MG Hector has an imposing stance, and that is something that caught the eyes of a lot of the Indian consumers. It grabbed a decent of market share at launch, and set the tone for the MG brand in India. The compact SUV is offered in multiple variants, but come with a single engine option.

The MG Hector has an imposing stance which grabbed a lot of attention in its early days in India.

    Mahindra XUV700 & Mahindra Scorpio-N:

Coming to the mid-size SUVs, the two most popular models on sale right now are the Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio-N. The biggest drawback of the two Mahindra SUVs though, is the waiting period, as both have over one lakh pending deliveries. One size larger than the Hyryder, the duo score big in space, but are also generous in features, luxury, built quality, and safety.

The Mahindra XUV700 & Scorpio-N each have over 1 lakh pending deliveries.
