Volkswagen India today inaugurated their engine assembly plant within their Chakan facility which includes a full-fledged engine testing facility. The German car manufacturer used to import engines from their Poland facility earlier.

    Volkswagen India today inaugurated their engine assembly plant within their Chakan facility which includes a full-fledged engine testing facility. The German car manufacturer used to import engines from their Poland facility earlier.

    The engine assembly plant was built in a span of 11 months and is spread across a floor space of 3450 sq.mt. Experts from VW's engine plants in Salzgitter, Germany and Poland helped out in creating this world-class facility.

    The engine assembly plant will have a capacity to assemble 98,000 engines annually in a 3-shift system. For the time being only the 1.5-litre TDI engine will be produced capable of two different power levels - 90 PS and 105PS. The company is evaluating the possibility of assembling the petrol engine as well.

    Devendra Fadnavis,Chief Minister of Maharashtra inaugurated the plant and said, "Its a good day for Maharashtra and India as we see a top manufacturer like Volkswagen taking a step to the 'Make in India' model. We hope thatime other companies follow suite"

    The latest investment by Volkswagen India in the Chakan plant takes the company's total investment to 710 million euro. The company does not plan to export the engines to other markets for the time being but are looking to do so in the future.
