2019 BMW R 1250 GS Gets New Engine, New Features

- New engine will be used in both R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT models
- New ShiftCam Technology is BMW's variable valve timing system
- New 1,254 cc engine makes 136 bhp and 143 Nm
BMW Motorrad has released the official tech specs and photos of the 2019 BMW R 1250 GS and the 2019 BMW R 1250 RT. And the most important change is the new boxer engine with more displacement which now gets variable valve timing. And the result is more power and more torque; the engine is now 1,254 cc, up from the 1,170 cc on the current BMW R 1200 GS, and it gets a longer stroke and a bigger bore and gains 9 per cent more power and 14 per cent more torque. The engine now makes 136 bhp at 7750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm. The R 1200 GS, on the other hand, makes 125 bhp and 125 Nm.

The big story though is what BMW Motorrad calls the ShiftCam Technology on the new engine. This is essentially variable valve timing of the inlet cam which has two set of lobes, one set with low lift and less duration, which provides improved torque, reduced emissions and better fuel economy. The second set of lobes has more lift and duration, providing full power and torque. According to BMW, there are lot of other changes as well, including a new unit gearbox design with updated wet slipper clutch, a toothed cam vs a roller chain, an optimised oil supply, piston based cooling, twin-jet injection valve, and a new knock sensor system for optimised ignition timing.

The new BMW R 1250 GS also gets an upgraded electronics package featuring two riding modes (Road and Rain), ABS, automatic stability control (ASC - which is BMW's traction control system) and Hill Start Control as standard equipment. Riding Mode Pro is available as an option, and includes additional riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Assist. The semi-active electronic suspension is also updated, and now features 'automatic load compensation'. The R 1250 GS comes with an LED headlight, and an LED daytime running light is available as an option as well.
The multi-functional instrument panel now features a 6.5 inch full-colour TFT screen, which offers Bluetooth connectivity with a smartphone. The BMW Motorrad Connected App offers satellite navigation, and additional functions such as route logging and travel statistics. The 2019 BMW R 1250 GS will be available in three variants - Standard, Exclusive and HP. The 2019 BMW R 1250 GS will go on sale globally in the next couple of months and expected to be available next year in India.
