Car Sales May 2021: MG Sells 1016 Units, Sees 60% Decline Compared To April 2021

- MG Motor India sold 1016 units in April 2021
- Compared to 2565 units sold in April 2021, it saw a MoM decline of 60%
- In May 2020 MG India sold 710 units seeing a YoY growth of 43%
Morris Garages India today released the monthly sales data for May 2021, during which the company sold 1016 units in the country. Compared to the 2565 vehicles sold in April 2021, the company witnessed a Month-on-Month (MoM) decline of over 60 per cent. This is mainly because of the challenges caused by the second wave of the coronavirus, which resulted in several states going into near-total lockdown, impacting both production and retail sales. Having said that, compared to 710 units sold last year, in May 2020, the carmaker witnessed a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 43 per cent. However, last year in May, India was still coming out of a total nationwide lockdown, so this growth is merely an anomaly.

Morris Garages India says vehicle production during May 2021 was impacted due to a shutdown to divert oxygen for medical use
Commenting on the company's performance in May 2021, Rakesh Sidana, Director - Sales, MG Motor India, said, "In these times, our efforts continue to be directed towards keeping people safe and maximizing service to the community. The continued lockdown in some states in June 2021 indicates that part shortage will continue to hamper overall production next month. Based on the booking trend we are hopeful of an uptrend in June."

The carmaker further stated that vehicle production during May 2021 was impacted due to a shutdown to divert oxygen for medical use. Furthermore, supply chain constraints also impacted production as suppliers too remained closed during the lockdown in May. Similarly, MG's retail business was severely impacted as almost all markets remaining closed during the lockdown for the most part of the month of May 2021.

In May, MG also deployed 100 Hector Ambulance in Nagpur and Vidarbha for COVID-19 patients
In terms of COVID-19 relief measures, last month, MG Motor India offered 200 sustainable beds for COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, the carmaker also partnered with Gujarat's Devnandan Gases, helping them to increase the production of oxygen by 31 per cent at the latter's plant in Vadodara. The company aims to ramp up the throughput by 50 per cent soon. In May, MG also deployed 100 Hector Ambulance in Nagpur and Vidarbha for COVID-19 patients.
