GM Confirms Chevy Bolt EV Battery Production Has Restarted

- The LG battery had a defect which was causing fires
- GM was forced to halt production and issue a battery replacement program
- Even the Hyundai Kona was impacted by this battery defect
GM's EV ambitions have taken a massive jolt in the recent past with numerous recalls and battery-related fires on its Bolt EVs. It even had to work with LG Energy Solutions its battery supplier to stop production and fix a defect that was causing these fires. Now it seems like these issues have been resolved and the production of batteries has been restarted by LG. This issue wasn't just isolated to the Chevy Bolt EV, but also many Hyundai vehicles also suffered from it. GM was forced to announce that all Bolt EVs which were sold between 2017 and 2022 will get battery replacements, something that GM had resisted.

The new Bolt versions are more upmarket
It even halted production of the Bolt EV till the end of October but things are now changing as LG has now resumed the production of the batteries for the Bot EV and EUV.

"LG battery plants in Holland and Hazel Park, Michigan, have resumed production. In addition, LG is adding capacity to provide more cells to GM. As a result, replacement battery modules will begin shipping to dealers as soon as mid-October. The root cause of the rare circumstances that could cause a battery fire is two manufacturing defects known as a torn anode and a folded separator, both of which need to be present in the same battery cell," said GM in a statement.
GM also added that it will be restarting production of the vehicles next month as planned before.
"GM will continue to prioritize Chevy Bolt EV and EUV customers whose batteries were manufactured during specific build timeframes where GM believes battery defects appear to be clustered. The company has established a notification process that will inform affected customers when their replacement modules will be available. The good news for owners is that the new batteries will include an extended battery 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty," GM added in a statement.
