Planning To Buy The MG ZS EV? Here Are Some Pros And Cons

The MG ZS EV is one of the few good electric vehicles that we have in India under the Rs. 30 lakh. It was the second product to be launched by Morris Garages India, and the company sold over 1300 units of the electric SUV in 2020 alone. Which, by electric vehicle standards is a big deal in India. MG Motor India even introduced an updated version of the ZS EV in February 2021. Right now, the company sells 250 to 300 units of the MG ZS EV every month, and if you are planning to buy the electric SUV, here are some key pros and cons that you must know about.

Pros

1. The MG ZS EV is quite a handsome-looking SUV and unlike most other EVs, it comes with an attractive diamond-stud pattern grille, along with features like - LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, sporty alloys, roof rails and LED taillights.

2. The ZS EV is also feature-rich. The SUV comes with a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing front wiper, cruise control, auto headlamps, power-adjustable driver seat, push-button start-stop with smart entry and PM filter.

3. MG Motor India also offers an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with the company's i-Smart EV 2.0 connected car system.

4. The MG ZS EV continues to get the same 44.5 kWh Hi-Tech battery pack that powers a permanent magnet synchronous motor. It develops 141 bhp and 353 Nm of peak torque.

5. While the ARAI certified range stands at 419 km on a single charge, MG says depending on weather and driving conditions, the SUV can offer a range of anywhere between 300 and 400 km. Which is still a good number.

Cons

1. The ZS EV is sold in India as a completely knocked down (CKD) unit, and thus is a bit on the pricier side. It's offered in two trims - Excite and Exclusive - priced at Rs. 21 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively.

2. The ZS EV is based on the pre-facelift ZS SUV and thus compared to the newly launched Astor (its petrol version) the SUV gets a dated cabin design.

3. Compered to its ICE or internal combustion engine counterpart, the ZS EV also doesn't get some of the latest features like the AI-powered personal assistant, ADAS and more.

4. A 50kW DC fast charger at a charging station can give you an 80 per cent charge in just 50 minutes, but the 11kW AC charger that customers get with the car will take close to 8 hours to do the same.

5. While there is a greater push for EVs, charging infrastructure is still far from adequate in India. So, the ZS EV might not be suited for long-distance travelling, unless you do proper planning.
