Auto Sales April 2022: Ashok Leyland reports 42 per cent growth in overall sales

- Domestic sales up 41 per cent
- Medium & Heavy trucks post strong gains
- Light Commercial Vehicle sales up by just 4 per cent
Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland posted a growth of 42 per cent in overall sales in April 2022 over the same period last year. The growth came on the back of strong demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCV) which recorded an overall growth of 77 per cent over April last year. Focusing on the domestic market, medium and heavy trucks were the main avenues of growth for the commercial vehicle manufacturer. Ashok Leyland saw an 83 per cent uptick year-on-year in sales for medium and heavy trucks with 6,805 units sold in the domestic market as against 3,723 in the same month last year.

Including exports, sales of M&HCV buses were up 83 percent though domestic sales only grew by 3 per cent.
Demand for M&HCV busses and light commercial vehicles (LCV) was flatter in comparison recording growth of just 3 per cent and 4 per cent respectively. The sale of buses was up by just 8 units year on year while LCV numbers were up by 146 units.

LCV sales remained rather flat with just a 4 percent growth overall and in the domestic market.
In terms of overall numbers, M&HCV sales stood at a cumulative 7,688 units (domestic + export). Sales for trucks were up by 77 per cent climbing from 4,000 units in April 2021 to 7084 units in the same month in 2022. Overall bus sales too were up 81 per cent though against a low base of 333 units. Overall demand for LCV remained flat with the brand recording a 4 percent growth – up by 152 units compared to last April.
