After tasting the success with the Celerio AMT, Maruti Suzuki India is now planning to introduce the same gearbox in several of its other cars including WagonR, Swift, Dzire and Ertiga. And the reason we say this is because of the fact that the company has already started testing all these vehicles in India, and they have been spotted several times. Of the aforementioned four cars, the first one to hit our shores will most likely be the Wagon R AMT, followed by Dzire, Ertiga and Swift. Since these will just be the AMT versions of the existing models, we don't expect any mechanical or design changes.
Powering all four vehicles will be the same 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) that powers the Celerio. Just so you know, MSI has recently set up a manufacturing line at Manesar under a JV with its supplier - Magneti Marelli. This move will help Maruti Suzuki to fulfil the rising demand for AMT-equipped versions of its cars.
Magneti, a Fiat Group owned company, supplies its kits to both Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors, and is in Joint venture with MSI since 2007. Formed with an investment of Rs. 75 crore, Magneti has a controlling 51 per cent stakes in the JV, whereas Maruti and Suzuki Motor Corporation own 19 percent and 30 per cent respectively.
