TVS Secures Patent for Fuel-Saving Air-Injection System

- TVS filed for patent in 2008
- New technology to improve fuel economy in TVS engines
- Expected to be introduced in new and upcoming TVS engines
TVS Motor Company has secured a patent for a new air-injection system which becomes operational and reduces fuel supply during deceleration. This is expected to improve overall fuel economy.
In a conventional secondary air-injection system, additional air is supplied at the exhaust port of the engine to dilute the exhaust gas which in turn reduces emission levels. This method however, doesn't reduce fuel consumption.
The new air-injection system proposed by TVS reduces the exhaust emission and also reduces fuel supply during deceleration, providing improved fuel economy. TVS had applied for the patent in 2008, but a first examination report was issued in 2014 and the patent was finally granted only a few months ago.
The new patent could mean new technology and a whole new marketing program around new and upcoming products from TVS. Fuel economy is a strong driver for sales in the high-volumes commuter motorcycle segment and automatic scooter market, and this new technology could be a win-win situation for one of India's top two wheeler manufacturers.
Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki have their own technology in reducing friction among moving parts in the engine and improving fuel economy. The Japanese giants have their own nomenclature for such fuel saving technology, terming them Honda Eco Technology (HET), Yamaha Blue Core and Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP).
The new patent will be a shot in the arm for TVS, since it goes beyond traditional technology which reduces friction and improves fuel economy. TVS Motor Company is known for making good products, both in terms of quality and engineering. Armed with the new air-injection system, TVS will now have a better chance of competing with market leaders in the commuter segments like Hero and Honda.
