Hyundai i20 and i20 Active to Get Airbags as Standard

Our sources have confirmed that the Hyundai i20 and i20 Active will now come with airbags as standard across all variants. Following in the footsteps of its rivals, Hyundai has taken another positive step in the direction of better occupant safety.

Hyundai's rival brands, Maruti Suzuki and Ford, have already introduced ABS and dual front airbags as standard on base models of their similarly priced hatchbacks and compact sedan offerings. Ford was the first manufacturer to offer the features as standard on the Ford Figo hatchback and Ford Figo Aspire compact sedan. Following closely on its heels was Maruti Suzuki, which made the 2 safety options available across all variants of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, WagonR, Swift, and Swift Dzire all of which fall below the i20 and i20 Active in terms of base model cost. Despite taking a bit longer than its competitors, it seems like Hyundai has now caught up with the pack. Other car manufacturers that have already incorporated these features on base level offerings include Toyota and Volkswagen.

The Hyundai i20 has seen great success in India in 2015 having sold nearly 1.2 lakh units. The car is available with either a 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.4-litre diesel engine, of which the diesel unit is used in the i20 Active. Both the i20 and the i20 Active are likely to receive a mild refresh sometime soon. The Hyundai i20 is rivaled by the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Honda Jazz in the hotly competitive premium hatchback segment. Once Hyundai confirms the presence of airbags on the Elite i20 and i20 Active's base models, the Jazz will be the last remaining car of the 3 to not be offered with airbags as a standard feature on lower variants.
