The new-gen Mahindra Thar was launched in October 2020, and it became an instant success. The new-gen model which has received a 4-star safety rating from the Global NCAP also comes with a host of modern creature comforts that has opened it to a wide range of buyers. Features like LED DRLs, alloy wheels, forward-facing rear seats, auto climate control, touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and good quality interior attracted a lot of non-enthusiast customers as well. However, what was missing from the equation was a proper, extended wheelbase 5-door version that could make it accessible to family buyers as well. In fact, it was something that even the enthusiasts wanted, and Mahindra finally heard their call.

While it's too soon to comment on what the SUV will offer, largely we expect the styling to remain similar. It's possible Mahindra might introduce some additional features like LED projector headlamps and maybe even a fixed metal hard roof. The cabin is expected to get wider and comfier second-row seats, and possibly even bigger boot space.

Mechanically we expect the SUV to share its engine options with the existing 3-door Thar. This includes - a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine. In the current Thar, both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission, while 4x4 is standard across all trims.
