- The Tivoli-based Mahindra S201 will not be a sub-4 metre SUV
- The Mahindra S201 is based on the SsangYong Tivoli's X100 platform
- The S201 might come with the carmaker's new petrol and diesel engines
Earlier we had told you that Mahindra will not be bringing the new SsangYong Tivoli to India, but instead, the automaker in working in a new SUV altogether which will be based on the Tivoli. Codenamed as Mahindra S201, prototypes of this upcoming SUV have been spotted testing in India on several occasions in the last one year and recently, another test mule caught on the camera, around Chennai. In fact, it is quite likely that Mahindra is currently on the last leg of testing and developments, considering the fact that the mule that was seen recently came with production-ready LED taillamps.

The upcoming Mahindra Compact SUV - S201 - is based on the Tivoli
As you can see in these images, we only have a view of the rear portion of the upcoming compact SUV, which is seen with a stylish pair of taillamps with 'L-shaped' LED lights. We also see that the SUV also gets a rear windshield wiper, and also what appears to be plastic cladding for the rear bumper, but nothing more courtesy on the heavy camouflage. Having said that, based on some of the earlier spy shots, we can tell you that the S201 will not be a sub-4 metre SUV and similar in dimensions to the SsangYong Tivoli. Last time we also saw that the test mule sporting a new set of star-shaped dual-five spoke alloy wheels.

Mahindra S201 is expected to come with the company's new petrol and diesel engines
On the styling front, we won't be able anything right now, but considering this is a Mahindra product we expect to see some signature elements like a chrome grille, beefy bumpers, lots of plastic cladding and maybe even an option dual tone paint scheme. The equipment list will also include, projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, electrically operable ORVMs with integrated turn signal lights, and maybe new alloys. Also, considering Mahindra now owns Pininfarina now, we might see some of the Italian design house's inputs in the design of the upcoming S201 compact SUV.
The powertrain options are also not confirmed as of yet but it said that the S201 will get the new 1.6-litre diesel engine that the company is working on along with the new 1.5-litre petrol mill that is also under development. Transmission option will include a 5-speed manual and possibly an AMT unit as well.
