Maruti Swift Hits New Milestone; Worldwide Sales Reaches 5 Mill Units

- Maruti Suzuki Swift worldwide sales reaches 5 million units
- India accounts for 54% of the total units sold
- Swift accounts for about 30% of Suzuki's annual sales in India
Known as the world strategic car by Suzuki Motor Company, the Swift is currently produced in seven countries worldwide that include - India, Japan, Hungary, China, and Thailand. The company also states that the car is favoured and widely accepted from emerging market such as India, to developed market such as Europe in more than 140 countries and regions around the world.
The car was launched in 2005 in India and currently accounts for approximately thirty percent (approximately 430,000 units) of the annual sales units of Suzuki. The Swift and its compact sedan sibling Swift DZire have been maintaining their position in the top 3 cars sold in the country, surpassing its own record year after year. In India, Maruti Suzuki Swift has received Car of the Year Awards twice since its launch - its debut year 2005 and 2011 when the full model change was introduced. The Swift DZire on the other hand, launched in 2008, is currently India's best-selling sedan for the last three years. It has been a category leader since launch and has helped Maruti Suzuki strengthen its presence in the entry sedan segment.
Globally, Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by the company's popular K12B 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine that comes in two versions - the standard and the DualJet. The Euro-Spec model also gets a sports version and gets 4WD version as well. On the other hand in India, the Swift is offered in both petrol and diesel engine option - 1.2-litre K-Series VVT and 1.3-litre DDIS engines. While the petrol version makes 83bhp and develops 115Nm of peak torque, the oil burner churns out 74bhp and develops 190Nm. Transmission duties in both the engines are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox.
