New-Generation Yamaha FZ-FI Spied Testing In India

- The new Yamaha FZ will be the third generation model
- The design of the bike will be heavily updated
- Expect a bump in engine specifications as well
It was the Yamaha FZ-16 which brought back life and more importantly, muscle in the 150 cc motorcycle segment. Over the years, the bike has undergone quite a few changes and became a loved motorcycle with the commuter motorcycle buying audience in India. It received a new-generation model about 4 years ago (The FZ S V2.0) but the segment has changed a lot since then and it is time for Yamaha to bring in a new-generation model in order to keep pace with the fast-changing segment as well. And right on cue, we have photos of the test mules of the new-generation FZ, spotted testing in India. There are quite a few changes and Yamaha will be launching the new model sometime next year.

(The new FZ will have a bunch of new features as well)The test mules in the photos are heavily wrapped in black masking tape but there are a few details which one can make out with respect to cosmetic updates. The bike retains its muscular profile and while the tank is fully taped, it does seem to retain its chiselled shape but could have a slightly different design. Then, there are the newly designed shrouds around the tank which seem to have borrowed their design from the new-gen R15. Also, the alloy wheels look to be borrowed from the R15 as well. The exhaust too is a new unit, similar to the one on the first gen FZ (the FZ-16).
The other changes that you can spot are the small belly pan at the bottom, the single-piece seat instead of the step-seat on the current model and the panels at the rear are all-new as well. The headlamp unit up front carries a different shape and there is every possibility that Yamaha might offer a full LED headlamp (similar to the one used on the FZ25).
The government has said that come April 2019, all new two-wheelers with displacement equal to or more than 125 cc will compulsorily need to have ABS and going by this, we believe Yamaha will offer ABS as standard fitment right from the launch itself. Of course, it could be a single-channel unit to keep the costs down.
With the new generation coming in, Yamaha could increase the power and torque figures on the engine as well. Expect the engine itself to get new components too. The new-gen FZ will go up against established rivals such as the Suzuki Gixxer and the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V along with the Honda CB Hornet 160R.
