Highlights

After months of speculation and waiting, Royal Enfield finally launched the Himalayan adventure tourer in India. The bike is the first ground-up new motorcycle for Royal Enfield India and is entirely a purpose built machine. The bike comes with an all-new engine, frame and features that stand a testimony to its touring capabilities. Although we cannot say that the Himalayan is the only tourer in its segment, can we? Yes we are talking about the Mahindra Mojo. The Mojo is truly a capable tourer and the only motorcycle in the segment that challenges the Himalayan is almost every aspect - price, performance and touring abilities.

All that said the Mojo has its own share of flaws that has been a topic of criticism like - bad power to weight ratio, poor handling and certain other elements that failed to impress enthusiasts. This brings us to the question whether Royal Enfield has finally cracked the formula for the ideal and affordable adventure tourer with the Himalayan and can it offer enthusiasts what the Mahindra Mojo couldn't? Let's put everything on paper and see.

    Design and Dimensions

One cannot deny the fact that the Mahindra Mojo is the better looking motorcycle of the two. It comes with a sharp and aggressive design language that is a head turner but when it comes to tourers, practicality is as important as aesthetics. This where the Himalayan comes in with more focus on practicality rather than looks. The Mojo measures 2100mm in length, 800mm in width and 1165.5mm in height, whereas, the Himalayan is longer at 2190mm, wider at 840mm and taller at 1360mm. Despite of being a larger bike, Himalayan and the Mojo share the same seat height of 800mm, which makes the former a suitable bike for shorter riders as well.

Another aspect where the Himalayan gets an upper hand over the Mojo is when it comes to ground clearance, while the Mojo stands 173.5mm above the ground, the Himalayan offer a massive clearance of 220mm that works best for its off-roading capabilities. In fact both the bikes weigh even the same at 182 kg but in the Mojo most of this weight is transferred to the front section thanks to the 21-litre tank and larger front forks, which play key role in putting the bike off-balance. The Himalayan on the other hand comes with a smaller 15-litre fuel tank that helps in weight distribution.

    Features & Equipment

When it comes to features both the Mahindra Mojo and the Royal Enfield Himalayan are at par with each other. The Mojo comes with some stylish features like twin pod headlamps with DRLs, larger fuel tank, USD forks at front and high pressure gas charged mono-shock with internal floating position at rear. The braking duties are taken care of disc brakes from JJuan for both front and rear 17-incher wheels that are wrapped with highly sticky Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan on the other hand gets a long windscreen, telescopic long travel suspension at front and a monoshock suspension at the rear. The bike get split seats with a more equipped instrument cluster that also offer a compass and altimeter. The Himalayan comes with segment first 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheels with special off-roading tyres from CEAT along with disc brakes both at front and back.

    Engine & Performance

When it comes to engine department the Mahindra Mojo is powered by a butter smooth 295cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that churns out 27bhp @8000rpm and 30 Nm @5500rpm. It comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox that is relatively smooth. The bike has good low-end torque and the engine is amazingly smooth and almost vibe free.

The Himalayan in comparison is powered by a bigger and all-new long-stroke 411cc single-cylinder, SOHC, oil-cooled, carburetted engine called the LS410 that produces 24.5bhp @6500rpm and 32Nm @4000-4500rpm and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Despite of producing less power the engine is not as smooth as the Mojo's but the power to weight ratio is much better in the Himalayan. The engine even houses a counter-balancer that reduces vibrations which is a welcome feature for a Royal Enfield.
