Key Highlights
- The Ignis scored 3-stars with the standard trim, 5-stars with safety pack
- The results are specific to the European spec model
- Maruti Suzuki will be introducing the Ignis in India early next year
The latest round of crash test results revealed by the Euro New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) for 2016 and the upcoming Suzuki Ignis managed to score a 3-star rating for the standard equipment trim, while the variant with the optional safety pack scored full 5-stars. The Ignis though is specific to the European-spec version and has no bearing on cars built for other markets. The model was part of a slew of new cars that were tested and included the SsangYong Tivoli, Ford Edge, Audi Q2 and Hyundai Ioniq.
The Euro NCAP's assessment for the Suzuki Ignis read, “The passenger compartment of the Ignis remained stable in the offset deformable frontal impact test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. Suzuki showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and those sat in different positions.”
Euro-NCAP's results also stated that the passenger compartment remained stable during the test period with good protection to the knees and femurs for the driver and passenger. The driver's chest protection though was indicated as weak, while protection of the chest was marginal for the driver and rear passenger in the rigid barrier test. The Ignis scored full points in the side barrier impact test and offered good protection across all critical body regions.
Apart from the Ignis, the Audi Q2, Ford Edge and Hyundai Ioniq scored 5-stars in the Euro NCAP tests, while the SsangYong Tivoli and Fiat Tipo hatchback with the safety pack scored 4-stars.
All set to make it to India early next year, Maruti recently showcased the production version of the car in India. In fact a couple of days of its official unveil, the car was spotted in the country without any camouflage. Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be the third product to go on sale via NEXA dealerships from the automaker and will be offered with the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines. Transmission options will include manual and a CVT unit.

2 Variants of the Ignis were tested by Euro NCAP

Both variants of the Suzuki Ignis for the European market come equipped with dual front airbags along with side head, chest and pelvis airbags. The standard variant comes with ISOFIX mounting points, airbag cut-off switch and seatbelt reminder. The optional safety pack equipped variant includes AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) for city and inter-urban transport, pedestrian safety system, lane assist system and radar-assisted braking on the highway. The Ignis also has low-speed autonomous emergency braking as part of its optional 'Dual Camera Brake Support' safety pack. The results of that system though are not part of the assessment.
